Some of the very greatest composers were creating professional-quality works at astonishingly early ages. Rossini was twelve, Mendelssohn thirteen, and Schubert fourteen when each began composing for small ensembles of strings. The results, however, are as fine as the creations of composers three or four times that age. In this program, we’ll sample string quartets by all three young geniuses, with perspective on how they managed to get such quick starts on their future careers.
