Sensory Inclusive Usher Training
Since 2013, the Lone Tree Arts Center has been cultivating sensory inclusive programming to support patrons with sensory processing disorders, autism, and intellectual or developmental disabilities (I/DD) in Douglas County and other south metro communities.
Our Usher Training Program is an extension of our commitment to sensory inclusive performances, designed specifically to empower individuals with disabilities. This program offers participants the opportunity to actively engage in the arts, build meaningful connections, and develop essential transferable job skills.
Since 2016, the Usher Training program has been helping adults with I/DD increase social engagement in an arts environment while gaining customer service, problem solving, and teamwork skills. Through a collaboration with the Wellspring Community, we train intimate cohorts of six to ten participants, each, in four-week sessions. Once training is complete, participants are invited to usher at sensory inclusive performances, mentored by “buddies” from our pool of volunteer ushers.
LTAC’s sensory inclusive Usher Training improves participants’ quality of life, provides job skills, and engages adults with I/DD in community. LTAC carefully delivers the curriculum, but equally importantly, nurtures a welcoming environment. By keeping the focus on camaraderie and acceptance, we foster a joyful sense of belonging. We see participants’ confidence soar as they master new skills, and they beam with pride when being recognized at their completion ceremonies on our Main Stage. Often, the most rewarding moment is when trainees receive their coveted green tie or scarf, signifying an official welcome into the LTAC family of ushers.
Trainings are typically held quarterly. For more information about the trainings, please contact Patrick Elkins-Zeglarski.
