In classical music, a fantasie (or fantasia: think of the film!) is an imaginative flight of fancy. Romances are usually song-like, even if they lack voices, and whether or not there are literally hearts and flowers, it is surely music well suited for Valentine’s Day. This program of works for viola and piano offers various explorations of the idea. The program features compositions by the husband-and-wife team of Robert Schumann and Clara Wieck Schumann, as well as composers from both before and after their time. Violist Philip Stevens, pianist Hsiao-Ling Lin, with concert host Betsy Schwarm, invite you to join them for the sweet sounds of musical romance.

Arts in the Afternoon is a monthly hour-long program that usually takes place once a month on a Wednesday afternoon at 1:30pm. The series features some of the finest classical, jazz, opera, and other musicians from the metro Denver area. Each show includes a significant educational component, with the professional musicians or their narrators sharing historical and artistic insights about the music they play. You can enjoy complimentary refreshments and conversation with artists after each performance.

Tickets to individual Arts in the Afternoon shows will go on sale June 13.
