The Zikr Dance Ensemble’s “Runes” will focus on the ancient magical northern European alphabet as it was used in its symbolic form for divination and prophecy. This stunning new work will feature the use of a cyr wheel along with a breathtaking set of monolithic structures designed by Perspective Design Fabrication visionaries Devin Gores and Charles Lefkowitz.
Also on the program will be one of the most intriguing and historic samples of The Gurdjieff Sacred Movements, a 2000 year old year-old work entitled "The Assyrian Women Mourners", along with the Zikr Dance Ensemble’s signature work and audience favorite, “In Your Eyes.”
For this show, Zikr Dance Ensemble is excited to announce a major new collaboration. Internationally acclaimed Persian dance master Shahrzad Khorsandi will create a new work entitled “Atash" (“fire” in Farsi) that will be staged for the Zikr Dance Ensemble’s female dancers.
The Zikr Dance Ensemble’s stellar cast of international dance artists will include numerous guest artists from the Colorado Ballet along with Zac Bigbee, guest artist from Taos, New Mexico.
The Zikr Dance Ensemble offers a spectrum of works that are based on transcendent dance rituals from many different ancient world cultures along with original and contemporary dance/theatre realizations. The Ensemble’s varied and unique repertoire ranges from the Gurdjieff sacred movements, including The Assyrian Women Mourners, which is over two thousand years old, to hypnotic interpolations of the Sufi Mevlevi Whirling Dervishes and the Balinese Sanghyang trance dance. Combined with the theatrical and ritualistic contemporary choreography of Artistic Director David Taylor, the Zikr Dance Ensemble offers stunning performance experiences of spiritual atonement for both audiences and participants alike. The breathtaking choreography and music is complemented by mesmerizing visual projections, completing an evening of mystery, rite and revelation.
